What is visceral massage, and how does it work?
Visceral massage (often called visceral or internal organs manipulation) is a gentle, precise manual therapy that evaluates and treats the dynamics of motion and suspension in relation to organs, membranes, and fascia [thetherapynetwork.com]. Your internal organs need to glide smoothly against each other as you breathe and move. When inflammation, surgeries, or injuries cause adhesions, these organs become restricted. This therapy uses targeted, light pressure to release those deep internal restrictions, restoring natural mobility and relieving referred musculoskeletal pain.
How can internal organs cause musculoskeletal or back pain?
Your organs are directly connected to your spine, ribs, and pelvis through a complex network of connective tissue (fascia). If an organ loses its mobility, the body automatically alters its posture and movement patterns to protect that area. This forces your muscles, joints, and ligaments to overcompensate, leading to chronic tightness, spasms, and pain in areas like your lower back, hips, neck, or shoulders.
Does visceral massage hurt?
No. This therapy uses a very gentle, specific touch. While you may feel deep pressure, a mild stretching sensation, or temporary warmth as tissues release, it should never feel painful. The pressure is always adjusted to your comfort level, and most clients find the session deeply relaxing.
How many sessions will I need before I see results?
Many clients experience a noticeable shift in their pain levels and mobility within 3 to 5 sessions. However, chronic and long-standing musculoskeletal issues involve complex compensation patterns, the exact number of treatments varies. We will design a personalized care plan during your initial consultation.
I have tried chiropractic, physio, and deep tissue massage. Why will this help?
Traditional therapies typically focus on the muscles, bones, and joints. If your pain is driven by a deep internal restriction pulling on your skeleton, treating the surface muscles will only provide temporary relief. Visceral massage addresses the hidden structural anchor of your pain, allowing your other therapies to finally work effectively and last longer.
Are there any reasons I shouldn't get a visceral massage?
While this therapy is safe for most people, it is contraindicated during acute infections, severe inflammatory flare-ups, internal bleeding, or directly over recent surgical sites that have not fully healed. Always let your practitioner know your full medical history, including any recent surgeries or medical conditions.
